4 Simple Ways to Instantly Feel Your Daily Work Is More Meaningful
October 05, 2022 - Doug Bell, Parallel Founder & CEO
90% of business executives understand the importance of having organizational purpose: “an aspirational reason for being which inspires and provides a call to action for an organization and its partners and stakeholders and provides benefit to local and global society.” (Harvard Business Review: The Business Case for Purpose)
But to make work more meaningful on a daily basis, people need to understand more than just what your organization’s purpose is. The key is connecting every role of your employees to your organization’s purpose in what they do on a daily basis. It’s important that employees feel as though the work they are doing on a daily basis has meaning. So the question you need to ask is: How are you connecting your purpose to your employees so they feel compelled to work for you? We help you do that.
Here are 4 actions you can start taking today to make your team’s daily work more meaningful:
- Work with purpose in everything you do by keeping visual reminders of your organization’s purpose omni-present throughout your work day.
Keep coming up with new ways of infusing your organization’s purpose into all of your work’s online and offline environments. You don’t want anyone to go through a day without a not-so-subtle reminder of why your company exists so they can feel that purpose every day. Keep the message, energy, thinking and emotions fresh.
- Know the priorities your company is working on to fulfill the purpose.
Let’s say your company has 5 top priorities and you’re contributing to 2 of them. If you only know your 2 priorities, you only have part of your company’s story in your mind. If you know all 5 priorities, you can understand how your priorities plus the other 3 priorities can add up to the fulfillment of your company’s greater purpose. You can feel your contribution making a bigger difference and you can better appreciate everyone else’s contributions.
- Know who is accountable for each priority.
Different people performing different roles may be accountable for each of your company’s priorities. Putting names and faces next to each priority makes it easy to see at a glance who’s contributing to the company’s most important priorities. Everyone can take pride in their roles, find their passions, love their jobs and contribute to a better future for all.
- Share purpose, priorities & accountability in a central, easy-to-use ‘purpose database’.
Keep your purpose database live, active and shareable so that everyone in your organization can access and share the current priorities of the organization and all people involved.
Taking these 4 actions can immediately start making everyone feel as though the work they are doing on a daily basis is more meaningful. They will know exactly how their efforts are connected to the company’s greater purpose and they’ll feel compelled to maximize their contributions to the fulfillment of that purpose.
